Ladies Fancy Shawl Outfits

Fancy Shawl dancers are the women's equivalent of Men's Fancy War dancers, and just as beautiful to watch. Most Fancy Shawl dancers are athletic and highly spirited young ladies. But some middle-aged dancers are still kicking it up gracefully in the arena.

A Brief History
Fancy Shawl dancing started in the 1960's on the northern plains, when a few energentic young ladies broke with tradition & let the powwow drum inspire their dances to be a little faster & "fancier" than women had ever danced. These early dancers ran into opposition to their new style at first, but they prevailed. This dance is a vibrant example of living Native American culture today.

Before Fancy Shawl dancing spread to Oklahoma, a few young women put on fancy dance bustles & competed against the boys in Fancy War Dance contests. Gigi Palmer, a Kiowa/Choctaw girl from a family of Fancy Dancers, is probably the most famous of these girls who went up against the boys & won!

Fancy Shawl outfits are priced according to the cost of materials, and the amount of time in the design work & construction.

Our complete teen & adult size competition outfits start at $700. Expensive fabrics & elaborate design work will increase the cost accordingly.

We also make individual pieces for dancers who have beadwork capes & leggings.

Shawls consist of a decorated outer panel, with a contrasting lining. Shawls are 60-70" wide and 28-31" long, without ribbon. Shawls with highly intricate designs (example shown at left) take many hours & will add extra cost. Shawls can be ordered without ribbon. Elaborate shawls with satin ribbon run from $250 to $500.

Flared skirts have a circular bottom lined with contrasting fabric, and an elastic waistband. Decorated satin skirts start at $150 if purchased separately. Expensive fabrics or elaborate designs may run higher.

Matching shirts with long sleeves complete the look for contest dancers, starting at $60.

One-piece dresses (shown at left) start at $175. Expensive fabrics or elaborate designs may run higher.

Leggings worn by Fancy Shawl dancers can be cloth or beaded. Our cloth leggings are often made from seqinned or metalic fabrics to add more sparkle to the outfit. Leggings are decorated with designs from the shawl. Some dancers bead over the top of the designs on their leggings, which are lined with canvas. Cloth leggings start at $75 if purchased separately. Expensive fabrics or elaborate designs may run higher.

Beaded capes, legging & matching hairtie
sets are unavailable at this time.

Capes can also be beaded or cloth. They are made with a vest front (see third photo) or harness front (see top photo). Vest fronts are tied in back at the waist. Harness fronts are held in place by threading a belt through loops on the back of the harness. Cloth capes run $125 if purchased individually. Expensive fabrics or elaborate designs may run higher.
